why

why is your site being built?

Answer this before you do anything else.

What you come up with can be anything, but for your own benefit, here are a few guidelines to start:

  • Have more than one reason. Get specific.
  • Don't have more than four or five. Electron microscopes are for trained professionals.
  • Don't just rephrase or break apart your mission statement.
  • Talk to as many people as possible who have a stake in this project before starting.
  • Find out what they think about the site, and why it should exist.
  • Take time. This is important. A mistake made here could screw everything up later.
  • Remember: you don't know everything, and
  • neither does anyone else.

That alone may be enough to get you going. But in the event you need some examples, these reasons were arrived upon when planning this site:

  • To educate on the principles of good interactive design
  • To be uniquely representative of the principles taught
  • To fulfill the requirements of a Master's Degree

Be honest. Hidden agendas will only sabotage the project. The primary motivating force for the creation of this site was that it was the culmination of a graduate program. So it made it to my list of "whys." Odds are, you're a member of my graduate committee, or someone they know.

The answer to this question is the driving force of your site, and will determine it's success or failure. And because only you know that reason, every site will be different, and what makes it a "good" site will be different. Resources like this one can only point you in the right direction.
