This site is the culmination of a Masters-level graduate education in the Department of Communication at the
University of Utah.
Its purpose, beyond simply being the fulfillment of a requirement, is to serve
as a publicly available resource to the community of those interested in interactive design. It is meant to
teach, by virtue of its construction and the information presented, the principles behind the creation of an
effective and usable web site.
The main thrust of information presented on the site surrounds a collection of five questions that an interactive
designer must ask about their project to effect a productive outcome. These questions were developed to be a
simple and pragmatic application of many of the principles culled from a graduate career focusing on this subject, as
well as a considerable body of theory from a variety of disciplines.
Beyond these questions, the informational content of the site is broken up into four additional categories. Two of these,
"the theory," and "the triangle," round out the straightforward informational "meat" of the site, while the others,
"about," and "help," while no less useful, serve a more "meta-information" or utilitarian purpose.
The processes and decisions made in the planning and construction of this site can be illuminating in the sense that
they are essentiall an applied trial of the principles put forth here, and much of this can be found on the
"building process" page.
For more information on the motivating factors and initial intentions of this project, please refer to the prospectus
written in preparation for the construction of this site. It is available for download in the
resources section of this site.
